Proof-reading

One important aspect of editorial work which is often over-looked in the creative writing process is proof-reading. Authors can be so deeply immersed in the creative process that they can easily and understandably forget the importance of presentation. This goes beyond formatting, line spacing, justification and choice of font. Proof-reading makes an important contribution to the professional presentation of a draft that is ready for submission.

Anyone who has tried to proof-read their own work will tell you what a difficult and tiresome task it can be. For one thing, you are already so familiar with your material that this final, painstaking, technical read through can feel like a chore. For another, you are so close to your own material that it can be surprisingly hard to spot errors and omissions, whether glaring or tiny.

That's why a professional proof-reading service can be so important. It's not creative work in itself, but it contributes significantly to the finessing of the created work.

David Smith, a partner in Annette Green Authors' Agency and The Creative Writing Consultancy, has been proof-reading professionally for nearly three decades. Fiction and non-fiction, dissertations, newsletters, brochures, management correspondence, legal documents, share flotation prospectuses, retail website copy - these are some of the many types of written communication he has worked on over the years.

Our proof-reading service is fast, efficient and competitively priced. We will identify and correct typographical errors and obvious omissions, as well as flagging possible errors. We will correct or adjust grammar where errors are clear, and flag up possibly unintended grammatical flaws. We will return your script with corrections made and marked, and with flags clearly distinguishable.

Price and Details

Depending on the extent of the work required, our service is priced at £3.50 to £5.00 per 1,000 words.

Also depending on the length of the material, corrected copy will be return in 7 to 14 days.

Ideally we prefer to work from hard copy scripts, but email attachments can be accepted by prior arrangement.
